Accelerating India’s Cervical Cancer Elimination Goals:

Alliance India’s Voice at a National Platform

The Department of Preventive Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, All India Institute of Medical Sciences hosted a national-level workshop titled “Accelerating India’s 90-70-90 Targets: Multi-Sectoral Action for Cervical Cancer Elimination” on 22 November 2025 in New Delhi.

The workshop brought together experts, policymakers, and civil society actors to deliberate on India’s cervical cancer elimination strategy, with focused discussions on HPV vaccination, screening and diagnosis, treatment pathways, and the critical role of multi-sectoral collaboration.

Representing Alliance India, Amrita Sarkar highlighted the often-overlooked vulnerabilities of key populations. She emphasised that members of the MSM and transgender communities are also at risk of HPV due to unsafe sexual practices and limited access to tailored health services. Her intervention called for targeted, inclusive approaches and harm-reduction-aligned strategies to ensure cervical cancer prevention efforts leave no one behind.

World AIDS Day 2025: A United Response

World AIDS Day 2025, observed under the theme “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” witnessed strong, community-led action across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Maharashtra.

Across these states, Alliance India’s implementing partners and community networks led diverse initiatives—from a mega awareness rally in Gujarat involving over 1,200 participants to the rollout of community-focused models such as the Ayushyam+ ART refilling initiative and the SOI (Skill Over Illness) job support programme by GSNP+.

In Maharashtra, partners prioritised comprehensive care through screening of people living with HIV (PLHIV) for co-morbidities such as osteoporosis, while Mizoram and Madhya Pradesh organised large-scale public awareness rallies and recognised the contributions of frontline service providers and community leaders.

Taken together, these efforts highlight the strength of collective action within the Alliance India partner ecosystem, reinforcing the importance of community leadership, collaboration, and sustained commitment in transforming HIV responses across states.

Skill Development and Livelihoods:

Empowering Communities in Bhopal

In Bhopal, efforts under SAHAS—a project working towards the holistic development of transgender persons—reflected the growing focus on skill-building and livelihood opportunities for the community.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), the state partner in Bhopal, in collaboration with Mahindra Skills and Anmol Samaj Seva Sansthan, trained 20 community members in data operations and makeup.

Of the participants, 12 completed the data operator course and 8 completed the makeup artist course. Following the training, six participants secured employment, two at a beauty parlour, two as data operators at the skilling centre, and two with a non-governmental organisation.

The initiative highlights how state-led efforts aligned with the SAHAS project are opening pathways to dignity, economic independence, and long-term resilience for transgender persons.

Celebrating Children’s Day with Care,

Nutrition & Joy in Ahmedabad

On 16 November 2025, Alliance India organised a vibrant Children’s Day celebration in Ahmedabad under the Bal Poshan Project, supported by TELUS Digital.

The event brought together children living with HIV (CLHIV) for a day that blended care, learning, and joyful expression. The programme began with anthropometric assessments (height and weight), followed by lively activities such as drawing competitions, fancy dress, and energetic dance performances.

A nutritionist-led session helped children and caregivers understand the basics of healthy eating and hygiene, supported by short educational videos designed to be engaging and age-appropriate. The presence of the TELUS Digital team added to the sense of solidarity and celebration.

The day was filled with laughter, creativity, and togetherness—reflecting the true spirit of Bal Poshan and reaffirming that every child deserves a healthy, happy childhood.

Strengthening Community Leadership

through CSS & CLM in Mizoram

In November, a two-day orientation on Community System Strengthening (CSS), including Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) under the National AIDS Control Programme Phase V (NACP-V), was successfully conducted in Mizoram for community members. Participants included members of the District Community Resource Group (DCRG) and Community Champions.

The orientation aimed to strengthen the capacity of community representatives to actively and meaningfully engage in HIV programme service delivery, monitoring, and community-led advocacy.

Through interactive sessions and discussions, participants gained a clearer understanding of how to identify service gaps, provide real-time feedback, and contribute to improving the quality of HIV services at both facility and community levels.

The orientation equipped community members with enhanced knowledge, skills, and confidence to strengthen accountability mechanisms and contribute effectively to the goals of NACP-V.
