Alliance India Celebrates Seven Years of

the Historic Section 377 Judgement

Alliance India, on 7th September 2025, organised a special event to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s landmark judgement on Section 377, a decision that restored dignity, equality, and justice for the LGBTQIA+ community in India.

As part of the celebration, three thought-provoking plays were staged, exploring the myths and stigma surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community and HIV, as well as the societal pressures that often force individuals to hide their identity and suppress their true selves.

The performances left a lasting impression on everyone present. Alliance India’s staff and attendees were deeply moved, reflecting on the courage, resilience, and strength of the LGBTQIA+ community in the ongoing pursuit of equality and acceptance.

Reuniting Lives through Care and Support

A young man from a small village in Nagpur, Maharashtra visited the Vihaan Care and Support Centre after being diagnosed HIV positive. He was deeply worried and emotionally distressed about his situation and uncertain about how to move forward.

Married in 2022, he had been living separately from his wife for the past three years due to his family’s disapproval of their marriage. Despite the distance, the couple continued to maintain their relationship. After learning about his HIV status, he made the responsible decision to disclose it to his wife so that she could also get tested and take preventive measures if necessary.

While his wife was supportive, the disclosure brought new challenges. His parents still refused to accept the marriage and further accused his wife of revealing his HIV status to others in the village. The situation became emotionally overwhelming for the young man, significantly affecting his mental well-being.

Understanding the sensitivity of the case, the Vihaan team stepped in to provide holistic support. The Project Director (PD), Project Coordinator (PC), and outreach workers visited the village to address the issue. They met with the woman’s parents and the village sarpanch to discuss the stigma, misconceptions, and lack of awareness surrounding HIV. Through open dialogue and counselling, the team helped the families understand that HIV is a manageable condition and that stigma only worsens the challenges faced by those living with it.

After continued discussions and reassurance, the girl’s family and the village leaders agreed to support the couple. The young woman decided to live with her husband again, and the sarpanch assured their safety and acceptance within the community.

Today, the couple lives together, better informed and emotionally stronger. They expressed deep gratitude to the Vihaan team for their guidance and support during this difficult time. Through timely counselling and community engagement, the Vihaan Care and Support Centre helped not only rebuild a family but also challenge HIV-related stigma within the community.

Strengthening CBOs through Capacity Building on Legal Compliances and Organisational Policies

Project Sahas, which is dedicated to the holistic development of the transgender and Hijra community,  an initiative under Alliance India, organised a comprehensive four-day training programme from 16th to 19th September 2025 to strengthen Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) by enhancing their understanding of legal compliance and supporting the development of robust organisational policies. The initiative aimed to equip CBOs with essential knowledge and practical tools to ensure effective governance, adherence to regulatory frameworks, and long-term sustainability.

The training brought together representatives from CBOs across Raipur, Bhopal, Jharkhand, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and Noida, along with direct project sites in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kerala. These organisations play a vital role in advancing community development, advocacy, and service delivery.

Through interactive sessions and expert-led discussions, participants gained valuable insights into compliance mechanisms, financial management, and organisational policy formulation. The programme reinforced the importance of strong governance structures and accountability, ensuring that CBOs are better positioned to lead meaningful and impactful social change within their communities.
